What we're working on

Femicide in South Africa

Over the past two months the bodies of nine women have been found in Ekurhuleni, east of Johannesburg. Most were in their twenties and thirties. One of them, Elizabeth Moselakgomo, known as Tsontso, was a 38-year-old mother who went out for her usual run and never came home. Three people have been arrested over the most recent killing, but police still have not said whether the nine cases are linked. South Africa declared gender-based violence a national disaster last November. Its femicide rate is thought to be five to six times the global average, and only about one in ten murders is ever solved. We have started filming and want to make this film properly, on the ground, with the people living it.

We're looking for

  • People in Ekurhuleni or Johannesburg who knew the women, or their families
  • Anyone who has organised or joined the memorial runs and protests
  • Women who have reported violence and can tell us what happened next
  • Police, prosecutors, doctors, counsellors or activists working on these cases
  • Men willing to talk openly about the attitudes towards women in the country
  • Footage, documents or reporting we may not have seen
